Birdsong II
A brown polka-dotted fabric serves as the background for this encaustic work. Layers of clear encaustic medium have been put down and fused to create a smooth surface for transferring a black and white image of a bird sitting on a branch. The edges of the piece have been painted brown to match the polka dots. ©2011 Susan Stayer BIRDSONG II Encaustic, 8 x 8 inches $200

Grant's Roosters, I
This piece is an encaustic with a photo transfer embedded in the top layers of wax. The rooster has been enhanced with watercolor and oil stick. I enjoy photographing chickens and roosters, something I started doing a few years ago while living in Australia. The rooster in Grant's Roosters, II, is one of the roosters being raised and shown by my friend Grant, who lives in Illinois. I met Grant while participating in the 2011 Fields Project in Oregon, Illinois. Grant raised chickens, turkeys, and roosters, and showed them in several fairs during the summer. Many thanks to Grant for giving me complete access to his birds and answering my silly city-slicker questions. I appreciate your patience! ©2011 Susan Stayer GRANT'S ROOSTERS, I Photo Encaustic, 11 x 14 inches $300

Twins
Twins was created by first drawing two tree trunks and branches on the surface of the board using graphite. After melting various colors of pigmented encaustic wax on the surface of my heated palette, I put the board face down in the melted wax and quickly pulled it away to create the textured greenery of the trees. ©2011 Susan Stayer TWINS Encaustic Monotype, 5 x 5 inches

Summer Glow
In the summer my parents have a big pot of these pink and purple flowers on the patio, and I can't resist photographing them. I printed and transferred the photograph into encaustic to make an even richer image, one that glows. The piece has been enhanced with watercolor and oil stick. ©2011 Susan Stayer SUMMER GLOW Photo Encaustic, 8 x 10 inches

Shady Side
I visited an arboretum and came to this stand of trees with the sun shining on a meadow behind them. There was a magical glow to the place. This photograph was printed and then transferred into encaustic and then enhanced with watercolor and oil stick. ©2011 Susan Stayer SHADY SIDE Photo Encaustic, 8 x 10 inches

Mists of Time II
During the summer if 2011, I was in a thrift store in Ohio when I found a Brownie Hawkeye Flash camera. I had to have it -- it still had film in it! I developed and scanned the film and found these two photos. Each of the images was printed on a laser printer and transferred onto a cradled board coated with clear encaustic medium. I enhanced the transfers with oil pastel, watercolor, and encaustic paint. ©2011 Susan Stayer MISTS OF TIME II Photo Encaustic, 8 x 8 inches
